Preventative, Examination Scalling

What is a dental examination?

At your first visit, your dentist will start with an examination, also known as a check-up. A dental examination will show how healthy your mouth is. After your examination, you and your dentist can discuss the results and plan the best way to deal with any problems.

He/She will

  • Check your teeth for caries (decay).
  • Look inside your mouth at your tongue, your cheek and lips, the roof of your mouth, and the back of your throat to make sure everything is healthy.
  • Look for oral cancer.
  • Perform all necessary x-rays, to ensure there aren't any hidden caries (decay) or infection.
  • Check your general medical condition to ensure the treatment you receive is correct for you.

There are different degrees of examination depending on how extensive a treatment you may need. After the check-up, your dentist will inform you if you need any treatment. He/She will discuss any different treatment options with you to decide which option will be best for you. You will be given a written treatment plan and estimate to take home. Your dentist will arrange further appointments, if necessary, to carry out the treatment.
